Use cases
Engine oil change without the mess
Insert the inlet hose down the dipstick tube, switch on the pump, and the sump empties in 2 minutes. Compare to lying under the engine fighting a hot drain plug while oil pours into the bilge. Same pump tops up the new oil from a jug — single tool, both jobs.
Diesel transfer / polishing
Transfer fuel between day tank and main tank. Pull water-contaminated diesel from the bottom of a tank for filtration. Run with a fuel filter inline to polish dirty fuel. The brass body handles the slight acidity of aged diesel without corrosion.
Hydraulic and gearbox service
Drain and refill steering hydraulics, hydraulic windlass reservoirs, gearbox oil. The gear pump handles ISO 32 to ISO 100 viscosities — covers every marine hydraulic and gear lubricant. Reversible direction means same pump fills and drains.

Check the liquid you're pumping
OK: engine oil, diesel, hydraulic fluid, ATF, gear oil. NOT OK: petrol (gasoline — fire risk), drinking water (brass contamination), salt water (corrodes the gears in months). If in doubt, check the liquid's MSDS for compatibility with brass.

Wire to a switched circuit
12 V: 2.5 mm² wire, 10 A fuse close to the battery, on-off-on momentary switch (push to run, release to stop — prevents accidental over-pump). 24 V: 1.5 mm² wire, 6 A fuse. Run the negative directly to battery negative — not engine block.

Plumb the inlet and outlet
Both ports are 9.52 mm hose tail or 3/8" FNPT. Use reinforced fuel hose (clear hose lets you see flow and air bubbles). Keep hose runs short — every metre of hose adds friction. Suction lift max 3 m vertical.

Prime by running
Self-priming means you don't need to fill the hose first — switch on the pump, it pulls fluid through. May take 10–20 seconds on the first run; subsequent runs are instant. If it doesn't prime in 30 seconds, check for air leaks at the inlet hose connections.

Reverse for the other direction
To reverse flow (e.g. from drain mode to fill mode), swap the polarity at the switch. Many users wire a DPDT centre-off switch for forward/off/reverse. Pump is bidirectional with no flow penalty either way.
