Boat's national flag (stern flag)
Standard daily use: raise the Finnish flag at the stern flagstaff between sunrise and sunset. Indicates the boat's nationality — required when departing/entering foreign harbours.
Mast flag for sailboats
On a sailboat, the national flag often flies from the leech of the mainsail or the gaff (traditional rig) — choose 30×45 or 40×60 cm depending on boat size. Brighter polyester colours fly cleaner than cotton in light wind.
Replacement for worn flags
Marine flags fade and fray after 1–3 seasons of UV + salt. Replace before the flag looks neglected (frayed edges, faded blue). A clean Finnish flag is a small thing but a big detail in harbour.

Pick the size
Rule of thumb: flag length ≈ boat overall length / 10, with a 30 cm minimum for visibility. A 9 m sailboat → 40×60 cm. A 6 m motor boat → 30×45 cm. Going larger is fine; going smaller looks neglected.

Attach to halyard or flagstaff
Marine-grade flags come with two reinforced edges and ties (or grommets). Attach to the halyard with bowline knots through both tie points — the lower edge is heavier so the flag flies cleanly. For a flagstaff, slide the flag's pocket over the staff or use the ties.

Raise at sunrise, lower at sunset
Finnish maritime convention: raise the flag at 08:00 (or sunrise if later) and lower at sunset (or 21:00 on long summer days). Lowering ensures the flag doesn't flap unwatched at night and shortens its useful life.

Courtesy flag in foreign waters
When entering another country's waters, fly that country's flag at the starboard spreader (sailboat) or short mast (motor boat). Your Finnish flag stays at the stern (or main mast) as your vessel's national flag. Courtesy flag is one size smaller than the national flag.

Maintain the flag
Rinse with fresh water after every harbor visit — salt fibres degrade the fabric. Wash in cool water with mild detergent, no bleach, no machine wash. Store flat and dry. A well-cared-for flag lasts 2–3 seasons; a neglected one frays in 6 months.
