Made in GB

Genuine LEWMAR spare parts for 3-speed self-tailing winches — the third-speed engagement assembly that handles the high-load, low-speed gear. These are the parts that wear out first under heavy sheet loads.

  • Original LEWMAR (UK) — exact OEM fit, not a knock-off
  • 6 individual parts of the 3rd-speed engagement assembly — order by number
  • Numbers (#1–#6) match the LEWMAR exploded view diagram
  • Compatible with the LEWMAR Ocean 40/44/48/50 and Evo 40/45/50/55 3-speed winches

Service strategy: If your third gear feels notchy or won't engage, replace #1 button + #4 spring ring first (most common failures). #2 pin and #3 spring are usually fine. See diagram in tech specs below.

Use cases

Annual winch service
During annual maintenance, replace the third-speed wear items (#1 button + #4 spring ring) preventively — €30 of parts vs. waiting for a winch failure under spinnaker load. Saves a race, saves a sail, saves a season.
Mid-season repair
Winch failure mid-passage? Stripping a Lewmar 3-speed on the foredeck in 20 knots is the kind of memory you don't need. Carry these parts in the spares box — pull, replace, sail on.
Vintage Lewmar rebuild
Restoring a 1980s–90s Lewmar Ocean? These OEM parts are the original spec — same fit, same metallurgy, same tolerance. Aftermarket alternatives don't exist for the niche 3-speed assemblies. Order from LEWMAR while still available.

Installation guide

1
Identify the failure
3rd gear won't engage? Likely #1 (button). 3rd gear slips under load? Possibly #2 (pin). 3rd gear stuck on? Probably #3 (return spring). Use the diagnostic in variant specs above before ordering — get the right part the first time.
2
Disassemble the winch top
With the winch handle off, remove the snap ring at the top of the drum. The drum lifts off, exposing the gear cluster. Photograph each layer as you go — modern phones make this easy and you'll need the reference for reassembly.
3
Strip the third-speed assembly
The third-speed engagement parts (#1–#6) sit near the top of the gear stack. Remove carefully, keeping the order — they go back the same way. Clean each part in solvent (kerosene or mineral spirit) and inspect for visible wear or fatigue.
4
Replace the worn parts
Drop in the new OEM part(s) — they're exact fits. Lubricate with LEWMAR-approved winch grease (or a marine waterproof grease — not auto wheel-bearing grease, which gets sticky in cold).
5
Reassemble in reverse
Reverse the disassembly. Each gear layer goes back in the same order. Don't force anything — if a part won't seat, you've got an orientation wrong. Re-fit the snap ring at the top. Test the winch in all 3 gears before sailing.
6
Service interval
3-speed winches should be serviced annually (full strip, clean, re-grease). Most owners stretch this to 2–3 years and only swap parts when they fail. Either is fine — but service IS required, not optional. Salt + grit destroys ungreased winches.
