Engine room fire suppression — the only system
You can't fight an engine room fire with a handheld extinguisher — by the time you open the hatch, the fire roars from the oxygen rush. A clean-agent system extinguishes the fire BEFORE you open the hatch. This is non-negotiable for any boat with an enclosed engine room.
Insurance / certification requirement
Most marine insurers require an automatic engine-room fire system for boats over 8 m with enclosed engines. USCG, MED and ABYC certifications make this Fireboy line accepted by insurers worldwide. Without it, your premium is higher or coverage is denied.
Replacement for expired CO₂ or Halon systems
CO₂ is dangerous in occupied spaces (suffocation). Halon is banned (ozone depletion). FK-5-1-12 is the modern replacement — safe in occupied spaces, EPA-approved, electronic-safe. Drop-in replacement for old Halon/CO₂ systems.

Installation guide

Measure your engine room net volume
Net volume = L × W × H of the engine compartment, MINUS the volume of the engines, batteries, fuel/water tanks. As a rule, gross volume × 0.85 gets close to net. Round UP — never round down.

Pick the cylinder by protected volume
Pick a cylinder whose protected volume ≥ your engine room net volume. When in doubt, oversize one step — a 25 m³ engine room with a 19.8 m³ cylinder is under-protected. The extra €500 on a bigger cylinder is cheap insurance.

Mount vertically near the ceiling
Mount the cylinder upright (gauge up) high in the engine room, ideally near the ceiling — clean agent is denser than air and sinks into the engine space. Use the included wall bracket bolted into a structural member, not a thin bulkhead.

Plumb the manual pull-cable
Run the manual pull-cable from the cylinder to a visible location at the helm and at the cockpit entrance. Two pull points = early discharge from wherever you are when fire starts. Don't shortcut this — manual discharge saves boats.

Wire the engine shutdown loop
Most insurers require the engine to shut off when the system discharges (so the engine doesn't suck out the clean agent before it works). Wire the cylinder's microswitch into the engine kill loop. This is non-optional — check your policy.

Document and tag
Tag the install date on the cylinder. Inspect annually (visual check of pressure gauge, pull-cable freedom). FK-5-1-12 cylinders are factory-charged for 10 years — refill or replace before the date stamp expires.
